The 3rd Annual Parkway Family Day takes place this Saturday June 25th at Millennium Park in West Roxbury. The event runs from 10 AM to 4 PM. I encourage all families from the Parkway area to come celebrate the day and enjoy the many activities and festivities. Some of the highlights of the day will include:

Noon - 1:30 PM: Salute to America featuring the Air Force Band of Liberty
Noon - 2 PM: Get your picture taken with Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster
2 PM - 3:30 PM - Parkway Idol contest for local area youth

That's not to mention the all day activities starting at 10 AM: The ReadBoston Storymobile, Massachusetts National Guard Rock Climbing Wall, Boston Fire Department Safety Truck, Kiwanis Bike Safety exhibit, Music by WROR, Arts and Crafts tables, Games and Sports, and much more. Food and ice cream is being provided to families by local area businesses.

Parkway Family Day is organized and run by my office along with community members from the Parkway Family Day Task Force. The event would not be possible without all the volunteers and local businesses who help out and contribute to the day.

If anyone has any questions about Parkway Family Day, feel free to post a comment here or email me through the website. I hope to see everyone there!   more »

Over the past couple weeks, the City Council has been in negotiations with the Mayor and his administration regarding budget and funding priorities for the coming fiscal year. The Council rejected the budget in a largely procedural move and is now working to have one in place by the end of the month. The Boston Globe ran a piece today highlighting some Council priorities that the Mayor has agreed to. Councillor Tobin touched on his priority to get more policemen on our streets.

Councilor John Tobin said that though the mayor's revised budget represents ''a gigantic step in the right direction," he still wants to add more police officers.

''June is leverage month for the Boston City Council," he said. ''Historically, we've rejected the budget. That's when we go to work and the horse trading begins. A lot of the priorities have been met. But I'd like to see us take a few steps further, put more police officers on the street. We're not even keeping up with attrition."

Unfortunately, in tight fiscal times, one of the things that seems to suffer is youth job programs. That's why I want to take this opportunity to point out a great non-profit program going on in Jamaica Plain that has my support. The Jamaica Plain Youth Mural Program (JPYMP) provides opportunities for JP youth artists to paint murals around the neighborhood. The dual role of the program is to beautify the neighborhood while also providing meaningful summer employment for these youths. Look for the JPYMP artists painting murals this summer near the recently burned First Baptist Church on Centre St, Motion Motor Sports on Columbus Ave, and with the Cape Verdean Community Unido in Dorchester's Uphams Corner. I highly recommend checking out their website for more information and click here to see some of their great work from last summer.   more »
