Under Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines, many affordable housing developments face the risk of becoming market rate units over the next few years. The Massachusetts Legislature's Joint Committee on Housing recently created a sub-committee to deal specifically with the current issue of expiring use housing. That sub-committee held its first public hearing today at St. John's Church on Washington Street in West Roxbury. Many residents from nearby High Point Village, an affordable development at risk, were there to provide their concerns and ideas. One of the key points of discussion was House Bill 4127, a home rule petition from the City of Boston passed unanimously by the City Council that would preserve these at-risk units as affordable. Councillor Tobin submitted the following written testimony to the sub-committee: more »

I want to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to the Puerto Rican community in my district and across the City of Boston for a very successful festival this coming weekend. I was honored to speak at the raising of the Puerto Rican flag at City Hall Plaza yesterday to celebrate Constitution Day and kick off the festival week. Puerto Ricans have made extraordinary contributions to the City of Boston and the United States of America. Fittingly, this year’s festival is dedicated to the men and women of Puerto Rico serving overseas in our military. To them and all the members of Boston’s Puerto Rican community, I thank you for all you continue to do for our city and country and have a great festival this weekend! more » Monday, July 25

Local restaurant El Oriental de Cuba in Jamaica Plain was destroyed by a firebomb this week.
Boston City Councillor John Tobin visited the scene and filed this video report: "That's our job as elected officials to get this restaurant open as soon as possible, to get the tenants back in their apartments, and build this place up better than ever. We've also offered to help find other restaurant jobs if that's what they desire. Let the Boston Police and Fire departments conduct their investigations and hope that the person or persons responsible for this outrageous act in our community are found and brought to justice." NSTAR is in the process of attempting to improve electric service in the Jamaica Plain area by converting key circuits to a more reliable and efficient system. This ongoing process, which began in 2004, is set to continue into 2007. The converting process, having already begun on Colburn Street, will continue throughout the summer, targeting areas such as Dunster Road, Orchard Street, Lakeville Road, parts of Centre Street, and other surrounding neighborhoods. In the event that an outage is necessary, NSTAR has stated that they will send notification through U.S. mail two weeks in advance of the planned outage. You can view a complete breakdown of the project at the Jamaica Plain Library as well as at the Community Health Center. NSTAR’s website provides further information, such as the planned work schedule and answers to frequently asked questions regarding the project.
For Customer Service assistance, call: 1-800-592-2000 regarding service interruptions, account inquiries, or moving information; or 1-800-572-9337 regarding gas leaks and other emergencies.
