ORDER OF COUNCILLOR JOHN M. TOBIN, JR.

WHEREAS: The City of Boston Public Works Department currently supplies residents with blue recycling bins upon request; and

WHEREAS: Many residents have contacted my office requesting larger recycling bins with lids which would hold a larger volume of recyclable materials and would better protect against wind, rain, and snow; and

WHEREAS: Other cities, such as Denver, Colorado, have recently implemented new recycling programs that will provide larger bins, will expand the types of materials accepted for recycling, and will offer more frequent pick-up days; and

WHEREAS: The implementation of new recycling programs has resulted in an increase in resident participation and an overall increase in recycling volume and revenue; and

WHEREAS: The City of Boston could improve its recycling program and increase the rate of resident compliance with the current recycling program by implementing similar changes to the program; Therefore be it

ORDERED: That the appropriate Boston City Council Committee conduct a hearing to review the City’s recycling program and invite the appropriate representatives from the Public Works Department and members of the public to testify.
