ORDER OF COUNCILLOR JOHN M. TOBIN, JR.
WHEREAS: The Inspectional Services Department issues permits to property owners for new construction and additions to existing structures; and
WHEREAS: Any project in compliance with that neighborhood’s zoning code is termed an “as of right” project; and
WHEREAS: Permits are issued for “as of right” projects with minimal notification to abutters; and
WHEREAS: That lack of notification often leads to confusion within neighborhoods because residents do not know what is happening on their street; and
WHEREAS: A sign on the property indicating what is being built and with contact information for Inspectional Services would better inform neighbors on the construction; Therefore be it
ORDERED: That the appropriate committee of the Boston City Council conduct a hearing to discuss ways to better inform residents to “as of right” projects in their neighborhood and that the Inspectional Services Department, other appropriate agencies, and members of the public be invited to testify.
